Who takes it, and what is different

Take General Training if you are moving to an English-speaking country such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the UK, taking up work experience, or going into training or study below degree level. As with Academic, the organisation asking for your score decides which test you need. General Training is taken at a test centre; the at-home option exists for Academic only.

The Reading test has three sections of increasing difficulty: everyday texts such as notices, advertisements and timetables, then workplace texts such as job descriptions and contracts, then one long text of general interest. Because the texts are easier, more answers must be right for the same band: 35 correct is the band 7 average, against 30 on Academic. Writing Task 1 is a letter, personal, semi-formal or formal, covering three bullet points in at least 150 words. Listening, Speaking and Writing Task 2 are identical to Academic, and so is the overall band calculation.
