IELTS One Skill Retake: Who Can Use It and How It Works

Conditions decide whether One Skill Retake is open to you. One more condition sits outside IELTS: the organisation you apply to must accept the result. Check all of them before you plan around a retake.

Whether you can use it

You need all of these.

The first two are settled before you book your original test, not after your results arrive. If a retake might help you, ask whether the centre offers it while you are still choosing where to book.

One Skill Retake is open on Academic and General Training source: ielts.org. It is not currently available for IELTS Online, only for a test taken on IELTS on computer in an official test centre source: ielts.org.

If a special requirement means you cannot sit a computer test, contact your test centre source: ielts.org.

What the retake itself is

You sit one section. It has the same format, task types, timing, marking and scoring as inside a full test, and the same 9 band scale source: ielts.org. You skip the other three sections.

Results come within 3 to 5 days. You get a new Test Report Form with the retaken score and the results of the other three skills from your original test. You choose which of the two forms to use source: ielts.org. If you have a deadline, add the sharing time too. How long IELTS results take covers it.

The original form does not disappear. A retake that goes worse than your first attempt costs you the fee, not your existing score.

A retake has a price, and prices vary by centre source: ielts.org. IDP is one of the three organisations that own IELTS.

With IDP, the price is the same whichever skill you retake. There is no separate registration fee, no payment processing fee and no extra charge for a last-minute booking source: IDP.

With IDP, you book with the same passport you used for your original test. You may use a different centre, but it must belong to the same company as the one you booked your original test with source: IDP.

The condition people find out about too late

A One Skill Retake gives you a valid IELTS result. Organisations register with IELTS to accept One Skill Retake results source: ielts.org. So not every organisation accepts it.

Check with the organisation directly before you book source: ielts.org. Accepting IELTS does not mean accepting a retake. Each organisation chooses.

Do that check for the specific course or visa route, not for the institution in general.

UK Visas and Immigration accepts One Skill Retake for Academic and General Training tests on computer in selected locations source: ielts.org. That is not acceptance everywhere.

Canada does not accept One Skill Retake for Express Entry. Express Entry takes IELTS General Training only, and your results give your Canadian Language Benchmark level source: canada.ca.

The Express Entry rule covers one programme, not every Canadian route. A permanent residence application through Express Entry needs a full test. If you apply on another route, check that route.

Your retake has to match how you sat the original

A retake uses the same delivery mode as your original test. If you chose Writing on Paper, a Writing retake must be Writing on Paper too source: ielts.org.

IELTS announced that paper testing would end from mid-2026, with timelines varying by market source: ielts.org. Ask your centre which options it offers. Computer or paper IELTS covers the change.

Retake, or ask for a re-mark

A retake gives you a new score from a fresh attempt. A re-mark looks again at the answers you already gave. It is called an Enquiry on Results. The two solve different problems.

In a re-mark, senior Examiners or Markers mark your test papers again. The fee is fully refunded if your band score changes. A result can arrive the same day you apply or up to 21 days later source: ielts.org. With the British Council, the fee is refunded if your score improves in any section source: British Council. If you think the mark is wrong, ask for a re-mark. If you think you had a bad day, a re-mark looks at the same performance. Only a retake gives you a new one.

With IDP, you can ask for a re-mark and a retake of the same test. Ask for the re-mark of Listening, Reading or Writing within two weeks of your test date. Then wait for the re-mark status before you register a retake against that test source: IDP.

A re-mark on its own can be requested within 6 weeks of the test date on your Test Report Form source: IDP. So the two-week limit applies when you combine a re-mark with a retake.

Whether it will move your overall band

Your overall band is the average of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band source: ielts.org.

One section is a quarter of that average. Lifting one section by a full band moves the average by 0.25 before rounding.

Suppose you score Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 6 and Speaking 7. The average is 6.75, which rounds up to an overall 7.0. Lift Writing to 7 and the average is 7.0. The overall band is still 7.0, so the retake gained nothing on the overall score. It gained a lot if your university asked for no section below 6.5. A section minimum is the problem a retake solves.

Organisations increasingly set requirements section by section, so a candidate is judged on their weakest skill source: ielts.org.

A retake fixes one section, and you get one retake for each test. If two sections are below the requirement, one retake cannot fix both.

Before you book, put your real scores into the band score calculator. Then read your offer or visa requirement again. Work out whether the overall band or a section minimum is blocking you. They need different answers.
