Compass IELTS

About Compass IELTS

Compass IELTS is an independent IELTS preparation platform: free guides and score tools on this site, and a practice app where you can sit full practice tests.

What this site is for

Preparing for IELTS is stressful enough without having to piece together how the test actually works. This site exists to explain it plainly: how band scores are calculated, what each section measures, and what the difference between Academic and General Training really is. It also gives you free tools that do the arithmetic for you.

The site is the free, public half of Compass IELTS. The other half is the practice app, where you can take practice tests and track your progress toward your target band. Nothing on this site requires an account.

How our tools are built

Every calculation our tools perform follows the scoring rules the IELTS partners publish. The band score calculator, for example, averages your four section scores and applies the official .25 and .75 rounding rule exactly as IELTS does, and the arithmetic is covered by automated tests at every band boundary. A result you see here is a result we can stand behind.

Where a rule comes from the test makers, such as scoring, format, or timing, we follow their published materials rather than folklore. Where a tool can only estimate, it says so.

How our content is held to a standard

Everything published on this site passes human review before it goes live, without exception. Our editorial policy sets out how content is produced, reviewed, and corrected. If you spot an error, we want to know: contact us and we will fix it.
