Two owners, two tables

TOEFL changed its score scale in January 2026. ETS and ielts.org have not published one shared comparison. This tool shows each owner's table as its own and does not mix them.

ETS, which runs TOEFL, publishes a table of IELTS bands against the new 1 to 6 scale. It is for tests taken on or after January 21, 2026. ielts.org publishes a table of IELTS Academic bands against the old 0 to 120 scale. It is for tests taken before January 2026.

ielts.org says scores from tests taken from January 2026 should not be assumed to be directly comparable with IELTS Academic scores. Its research report on the new TOEFL warns that using the older tables for the new test risks misreading scores. ETS publishes a table for the new scale. The two owners differ, so the tool labels every result with whose table it comes from. Both tables were last checked in October 2026. We recheck them and update this tool when they change.

What the tables do not tell you

ETS says comparison tables are useful as general guides, but they cannot predict the exact score a test taker would get on the other test. Treat every result here as a guide. A candidate can score above or below it.

Both tables are keyed by IELTS band. Going from TOEFL to IELTS reads them backwards, so the tool shows only the rows that list your score. If a score has no row, it says so rather than guessing between rows.

ETS builds the total in its table by rounding up to the next half band. That is a choice made for the table. It is not how ETS scores a test.

If you have four IELTS section scores, work out your overall band first with the band score calculator. The CEFR levels IELTS draws for each band are in the IELTS to CEFR converter. For how the two tests differ, not only their scores, read IELTS vs TOEFL.

Frequently asked questions

What TOEFL score is IELTS 6.5?

In ETS's table, IELTS 6.5 sits at 4.5 on the 1 to 6 scale, for tests taken on or after January 21, 2026. In ielts.org's table it sits at 81 to 90 on the 0 to 120 scale, for tests taken before January 2026.

What IELTS band is a TOEFL score of 100?

For a test taken before January 2026, a total of 100 sits at IELTS 7.5 in ielts.org's table. IELTS 7.0 sits at 91 to 99. For a newer test, use the 1 to 6 score instead.

Which table do I use if I took TOEFL in 2025?

Use ielts.org's 0 to 120 table. It covers TOEFL iBT tests taken before January 2026, and ETS says those scores stay active for two years.

Which table do I use for a test taken in early January 2026?

Neither table names the days from January 1 to January 20, 2026. One table covers tests before January 2026 and the other covers tests on or after January 21. Check with the institution before relying on a comparison.

I took the new TOEFL. Can I use the 0 to 120 score on my report?

Not with ielts.org's table, which says it applies only to tests taken before January 2026. Use your 1 to 6 score with ETS's table instead.

Can I convert one section score?

Each table lists a section column beside the total. The tool shows that row as a section-for-section reference. It does not say what a candidate with a given overall band would score in a section.

Why does the tool not place IELTS bands under 4.0?

Both tables start at IELTS 4.0. The tool places only what the owners print.

Will a university accept this conversion?

Each institution sets its own requirement, and it may ask for an IELTS or TOEFL score outright. Check the score it names. The tables are guides, not exact matches.
