Why Take IELTS? Study, Work and Migration
People take IELTS to study abroad, to work, or to apply for a visa. See what a result gives you, what it cannot do, and when another test counts.
Why do people take IELTS?
IELTS tests English for study, work or migration source: British Council.
Most people take it because someone asked for proof of their English. That someone is a university, an employer, a professional body or a government office.
To study abroad
IELTS Academic is for undergraduate or postgraduate study source: ielts.org. IELTS General Training is for training or study below degree level source: ielts.org.
Educational institutions may choose to accept results from IELTS Academic tests taken online source: ielts.org. Ask your university before you book.
To work or register in a profession
IELTS Academic is also for professional registration, such as doctors and nurses source: ielts.org.
If you want to move abroad for work and need a visa, the test to choose is General Training source: ielts.org. Your employer or visa office has the final say on the version.
To migrate or apply for a visa
IELTS General Training is for migrating to an English-speaking country source: ielts.org.
Each government sets which tests count for its visas. Who accepts IELTS? goes through the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
What a result gives you
You get a band for each of the four sections and an overall band source: ielts.org.
On computer, results are available 1 to 5 days after the test source: ielts.org. One Skill Retake lets you resit one skill instead of the whole test source: ielts.org. Not every organisation accepts a retake, so check with yours before you book. One Skill Retake explains the rules.
What a result cannot do
There is no pass or fail in IELTS source: Cambridge. A band does not get you in by itself. An organisation compares it with its own requirement.
IELTS is not the only test
Some routes accept other tests as well. Canada also accepts CELPIP-General and PTE Core for Express Entry source: IRCC.
If your organisation accepts more than one, compare them. These guides cover the main rivals: IELTS vs TOEFL, IELTS vs PTE, IELTS vs Duolingo and IELTS vs CELPIP.
Some routes do not need a test
For New Zealand skilled residence visas, the main applicant can show English through citizenship, work or study, or by taking a test source: Immigration New Zealand. Read your own route's rules first.
