IELTS vs PTE Academic: Key Differences

PTE Academic takes about 2 hours, only at a test centre, and its results usually come within 48 hours. IELTS Academic takes 2 hours 45 minutes. The two also differ in who marks you.

Who marks you

PTE Academic is marked by an AI scoring system, and you do not interact with a human examiner. Some responses are also reviewed by a human expert before the automated score is final source: Pearson.

In IELTS, certificated examiners assess each Writing task source: ielts.org. Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, and the test is recorded source: ielts.org.

PTE Academic cannot be taken at home. It runs at a test centre on a computer source: Pearson. Its three parts last 76 to 84 minutes for Speaking and Writing, 23 to 30 minutes for Reading and 31 to 39 minutes for Listening source: Pearson. Those times add up to between 2 hours 10 minutes and 2 hours 33 minutes, so treat "about 2 hours" as approximate.

Most PTE Academic results arrive within two business days, and some take up to five source: Pearson.

IELTS Listening, Reading and Writing run in one session source: ielts.org. Speaking is a separate interview. IELTS test format and timing gives each section's length and when Speaking is held.

Comparing the scores

Pearson and ielts.org each publish a comparison, and this guide copies neither.

Pearson updated its comparison with IELTS Academic from research published in July 2025 source: Pearson.

ielts.org carries its own table, based on a study by the IELTS Partners. It is better to compare by skill than by the overall score. ielts.org cannot confirm how the overall PTE Academic score is calculated source: ielts.org.

The two tables are separate, and neither page says they match. This guide gives no figure of its own. Ask your organisation which PTE score it accepts. To work out an IELTS overall band, use the band score calculator.

Which test will your organisation accept?

Your university or visa office decides which test and score it accepts. Look up the exact requirement before you book either test.

PTE Academic is accepted by Australia's Department of Home Affairs and by Immigration New Zealand for the visa types that need an English test source: Pearson. For the UK, use PTE Academic for study at UK universities. Use PTE Academic UKVI for work visas and for study below degree level source: Pearson.

IELTS Online is not accepted for immigration purposes source: ielts.org. Academic or General Training explains which IELTS test you need.

Choosing by what you want from the test

If your organisation accepts both, these differences can decide it:

  • You prefer to answer a person. IELTS Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner source: ielts.org.
  • You prefer to answer a computer. With PTE Academic you do not interact with a human examiner source: Pearson.
  • You want results fast. PTE Academic results are typically within 48 hours source: Pearson, and IELTS on computer takes 1 to 5 days source: ielts.org.
  • You want to write by hand. IELTS announced Writing on Paper for selected countries from mid-2026, and it is not available with IELTS for UKVI source: ielts.org. Computer or paper IELTS covers it. PTE Academic is a computer-based test.

Weighing a third option? IELTS vs TOEFL covers the 2026 score change, and IELTS vs the Duolingo English Test covers the adaptive home test.

The IELTS facts come from ielts.org's Academic test, test day advice, Writing and Speaking format pages, Ways to take IELTS, IELTS Online, Writing on Paper, IELTS scoring in detail and Compare IELTS pages.
