Computer or Paper IELTS: What Is Changing and What It Means

If you are choosing between a computer test and a paper test, you may soon have no choice. IELTS announced the change in these words.

Because timelines vary, a centre in one country may have stopped offering paper while a centre in another has not.

None of this changes what the test measures. The skills assessed and the way institutions should read results stay the same source: ielts.org.

Writing on Paper: handwriting inside a computer test

The option is planned for selected countries from mid-2026 source: ielts.org.

The name is misleading. It is not the old paper test brought back.

You sit Listening, Reading and Speaking as any computer candidate does. The Writing tasks appear on screen, and you answer them in pen on an IELTS Writing Answer Sheet source: ielts.org.

The task types, the scoring and the time are the same as for typed Writing. That is 60 minutes for two tasks. The option is open on Academic and General Training. It is not open on IELTS for UKVI source: ielts.org.

Results arrive within five days of your test date. Your Test Report Form does not say which option you chose source: ielts.org. A receiving organisation cannot tell either way.

Results from a typed computer test can arrive in one or two days source: ielts.org. Handwriting adds a little waiting at the end.

Do the two give the same score

IELTS ran a field trial in November 2025. Participants took Writing on Paper within 90 days of a previous paper-based test, and they also answered a survey about how the test felt. The trial found a strong alignment of scores across skills between the two source: ielts.org.

Scores are comparable across formats, both overall and within each score band source: ielts.org.

A study of groups cannot tell you how you will do. If handwriting is slower for you than typing, or the other way round, you will feel that on the day. The assessment criteria are the same either way. How IELTS Writing is marked covers all four.

A paper result you already hold is not affected

A paper result stays valid until the end of the recommended two-year period source: ielts.org.

If you took a paper test last year and apply this year, your Test Report Form is the document it always was. How long IELTS results stay valid covers the two years.

How long results take, by delivery mode

Computer is faster than paper. Writing on Paper has no lower figure, so plan on five days. The full list, with IELTS Online and UKVI, is in how long IELTS results take.

Computer results take 1 to 5 days source: ielts.org. Paper results arrive within 13 days, or 7 days in India source: ielts.org.

Most computer results are now issued within 2 days source: ielts.org. Plan around five days, and treat one or two days as a good outcome.

If you have booked, or are about to

Check what your own centre offers rather than assuming. The switch is happening market by market, so your country may be early or late in it. If you want to handwrite, ask whether Writing on Paper is running there yet.

A One Skill Retake must be taken in the same delivery mode as the original test. A Writing retake after Writing on Paper must also be on paper source: ielts.org.

IELTS announced these changes and has not said they are finished, so check your own centre's options close to your booking date.
