Computer or Paper IELTS: What Is Changing and What It Means

If you are weighing up a computer test against a paper one, the choice is closing. IELTS has said that from mid-2026 it will no longer offer IELTS as a paper-based test, and that all tests will be delivered on computer. Exact timelines vary by market, so a centre in one country may have stopped offering paper already while a centre in another has not.
None of this changes what the test measures. IELTS states that the skills assessed, the test construct, and the way results should be interpreted by institutions all stay as they are.
What replaces handwriting
For anyone who would rather write by hand, IELTS is introducing an option called Writing on Paper in selected countries. It is worth being precise about what that is, because the name invites a wrong guess. It is not the old paper test brought back. You sit Listening, Reading and Speaking exactly as any computer candidate does. The Writing tasks appear on screen, and you answer them in pen on an IELTS Writing Answer Sheet.
Everything else about the Writing component holds. Same task types, same scoring, same 60 minutes for two tasks. Writing on Paper is available for both Academic and General Training. It is not available if you are taking IELTS for UKVI, which is fully digital.
Two details are easy to miss. Your Test Report Form does not record which option you chose, so a receiving organisation cannot tell either way. And results arrive within five days rather than the day or two a fully typed computer test usually takes, so handwriting costs you a little time at the end.
Do the two produce the same score
That is the question worth asking about any format change, and IELTS has published an answer. In November 2025 it ran a field trial comparing Writing on Paper against the paper-based test. Participants took Writing on Paper within 90 days of a previous paper-based test and also answered a perception survey. IELTS reports a strong alignment of scores across skills between the two, and says scores are comparable both overall and within each band.
What a comparability study cannot tell you is how you personally will do. If handwriting is slower for you than typing, or the other way round, that difference is real on the day whatever the aggregate shows. The assessment criteria are the same either way, and they are the thing worth preparing against: how IELTS Writing is marked covers all four.
A paper result you already hold is not affected
Paper-based results stay valid to the end of the recommended two-year period, the same as any other IELTS result. Nothing is being reissued, rescored or withdrawn. If you took a paper test last year and are applying this year, your Test Report Form is the document it always was.
How long results take, by delivery mode

One caution on reading that table. Elsewhere on the same site the computer figure is given as one to five days, and the results page states that most computer results are now issued within two days, on global test data from 2024. Plan around one to two days as typical and five as the outer edge, not as a promise.
If you have booked, or are about to
Check what your own centre offers rather than assuming, because the switch is happening market by market and your country may be early or late in it. If handwriting matters to you, ask specifically whether Writing on Paper is running there yet.
One rule catches people out after the fact. A One Skill Retake has to be taken in the same delivery mode as the original test, so if you choose Writing on Paper, a Writing retake has to be Writing on Paper too.
What does not change
Your four section scores still average to an overall band, rounded to the nearest half band, whichever way you sat the test. You can try any combination in the band score calculator.
