How Long Does It Take to Get Your IELTS Results?

The wait depends on how you sat the test, not on where you sat it or on what you scored. A computer test is the fastest route, an online test takes roughly twice as long, and paper, where it is still offered, is slower than either. The published spread runs from one day to thirteen, so if you are working to an application deadline it is worth knowing which end of that spread you are at.

How long each format takes

Computer is fastest, online is slower, and paper is slowest of the three. These are the figures IELTS publishes on its results page. A second IELTS page gives a faster computer figure of one to two days and a separate seven day figure for paper in India, so read the table below as the conservative version.

Two of those rows are shrinking. IELTS has said it will stop offering the paper test from mid-2026 and move all testing onto computer, with timelines varying by market, so the 13 day row applies only where paper is still running. IELTS gives its turnaround as within five days and does not publish the lower bound it gives the standard computer test, so five days is the number to plan against rather than one. Where your result shows up first

Online, before any paper arrives. IELTS runs a Test Taker portal, and to get into it you need the passport or ID number you registered with plus your candidate number. Use the same document you booked with, because a different one will not match the record.

Which door you use depends on who you booked through. If you registered through the British Council you get an email with a link to your scores. If you registered through IDP you find them in your IDP account. If you took the test in the United States you get an email linking to your IELTS USA account.

What you receive, and in which form

An IELTS Test Report Form. That is the official proof of your result, and it comes either as a paper copy or as a digital eTRF.

Which one you get follows the way you tested. A test centre test, on paper or on computer, gets a paper Test Report Form, although IELTS says some countries are now issuing eTRFs instead and tells you to check with your centre. IELTS Online gets an eTRF.

One change worth knowing if you are holding an older form. From 15 July 2026 every Test Report Form carries the Ofqual logo and qualification title, because IELTS qualifications are regulated by Ofqual and the older design did not meet its requirements. Forms issued before that date stay valid for university and visa applications. If you retake one skill

Results come back within 3 to 5 days. That is not faster than a computer test, which can land in one day, but it saves you from resitting all four skills and starting the whole wait over. If you ask for a re-mark

This is the one with no useful average. An Enquiry on Results can come back the same day you apply or take up to 21 days, and IELTS says the time depends on several factors, including how many sections you asked to have re-marked. Senior examiners and markers do the re-marking; if a mark changes, your test centre issues a new Test Report Form. The fee is refunded in full if your band score changes. If 21 days pass with no answer, IELTS tells you to contact your test centre.

So a re-mark is not a fast way to fix a result before a deadline. Three weeks is the outer edge, and you have to add whatever the sending process then takes.

Counting back from a deadline

The result date is not the date an organisation has your score. Sharing is a separate step with its own timing, and postal delivery is slower than the electronic route. If your result has not appeared by the top of the range for your format, your test centre is the only place that can look it up. IELTS routes every question about an individual result there rather than handling it centrally.
