Using AI to Prepare for IELTS

AI tools can help you practise and spot mistakes. They cannot give you a real IELTS band, and you should not use one in the test. IELTS examiners mark Writing and Speaking.

What an AI tool can help with

Some AI writing tools can correct grammar, suggest changes of style, and check tone and register. Other AI tools give feedback on pronunciation and fluency, or work through your Speaking practice questions with you source: IDP.

That makes an AI tool useful for practice. It can point out mistakes and help you rehearse.

How to use one

  • Ask it to quote each sentence in your writing that has a mistake and to say what is wrong. Then check each correction in a grammar book or with a teacher.
  • Fix the sentence yourself. Do not paste in the tool's version.
  • Keep a list of the mistakes it finds. Look for the ones you repeat.
  • For Speaking, record your answer. Ask the tool for feedback on pronunciation and fluency. Then play the recording to someone who speaks good English.
  • Do timed practice tests with official material. How to prepare for IELTS links to it.

Where AI falls short

A large language model (LLM) is the kind of AI behind chat tools such as ChatGPT. The band descriptors are the official description of each band.

LLM tools should not be used to grade IELTS essays. They do not match how human examiners mark against the band descriptors. They can also invent facts and overlook errors source: IDP.

If a tool corrects your writing as you go, you stop learning from your own mistakes source: IDP.

Some tools focus on grammar or pronunciation and may miss clarity, style or coherence source: IDP.

Speaking is scored live by a human examiner. A computer could not analyse your performance as fully, or spot subtle meanings source: IDP.

AI struggles with nuances such as tone, register and the flow of ideas source: IDP.

AI dialogue systems are harder to standardise, so they are not yet suitable to play the role of a fair examiner source: ielts.org. That article is about testing, not practice. It is dated 15 April 2026.

A prompt is the instruction you type to an AI tool.

Good prompts can make AI answers more precise. The answers can still miss the context, show bias, or be unreliable and inconsistent source: ielts.org.

That comes from a research report that ielts.org hosts. It is research, not an IELTS rule.

Who gives the real band

IELTS examiners assess each Writing task. They use four criteria: Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy source: ielts.org.

The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with an examiner, and it is recorded. Examiners assess four criteria: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation source: ielts.org.

IELTS Ready, the British Council's preparation package, has mock tests with "estimated scores and AI feedback" source: British Council. The 25-minute and 50-minute mock tests are labelled as giving estimated scores.

An AI band is an estimate, not a result. Your real band comes only from the test. Check how any tool describes its score. IELTS Writing marking criteria and IELTS Speaking marking criteria explain the criteria.

None of the pages we read says that an AI tool is checked against these criteria. None gives a measure of how closely a named AI tool agrees with an IELTS examiner. So we do not recommend a particular tool.

The IDP facts come from IDP's AI for IELTS Preparation article, dated 9 January 2026, and its IELTS Online terms and conditions, dated 5 June 2022. The ielts.org facts come from its research report, dated 20 May 2025, its article on AI in Speaking assessment, dated 15 April 2026, its General Training Writing and Speaking pages, its test day advice and its IELTS Online page. The IELTS Ready facts come from the British Council's IELTS Ready page. The other pages show no date. All were last checked on 15 October 2026.
